National Journal reports:

Even before President Obama on Tuesday blasted Republicans and Mitt Romney for backing a controversial GOP budget plan, Romney appealed to the president not to simply blame Republicans for the current state of the economy and nation.

“Instead of standing up and saying, as the president, his policies have not worked, he of course will look for someone else to blame,” Romney said while campaigning at a sub shop in Waukesha, in remarks that appeared to serve as a prelude to the bruising fight expected over the next six months.

The human mind is more amazing than the universe,” said my teenage daughter the other day. “How come?” I asked. “Well, it all really starts in our heads, doesn’t it? Like, without our minds there wouldn’t be a universe.

Is The World An Idea?

It got me thinking. The rift between what is and what is perceived is at least as old as philosophy itself. Yes, it has something to do with the popular “if a tree falls in a forest and no one sees it, did it fall?” or “if you are not looking at the moon is it really there?” But things are a bit more complex than that. (By the way, the answer is unequivocally “yes” to both of those questions, at least to this blogger.) -Marcelo Gleiser

STARBURST   On March 2, 2012 a new active region on the sun, region 1429, rotated into view. It has let loose two M-class flares and one X-class so far. The M-class flares erupted on March 2 and on March 4. The third flare, seen above, rated an X1, peaked at 10:30 ET on March 4. A coronal mass ejection accompanied each flare, though due to the fact that this active region is still off to the side of the sun, they will likely have a weak effect on Earth’s magnetosphere.  The M class flare on March 4 also came with what’s called a Type IV radio burst that lasted for about 46 minutes. Sending out broadband radio waves, these bursts can occur towards the end of a solar flare and are believed to be created by moving electrons trapped in great, looping magnetic fields left over from the initial flare. The bursts can interfere with radio communications on Earth.  (Photo: Solar Dynamics Observatory / NASA)
